The big news out of France today wasn’t about the Tour. Angelina Jolie left a French Riviera hospital where she gave birth to twins. Her release made U.S. headlines.
That’s no surprise. Today’s Tour stage 14 was predictable: flat, fast and a group sprint finish. But this time the sprint was missing a key player. Team Columbia’s Mark Cavendish, who won four stages including the last two, fell off the back of the peloton on the final climb. Cav rolled in more than three minutes behind the main field. During the last six miles, Cav was visibly tired. But his performance today should be ignored because he’s already proved that he’s the world’s fastest cyclist.
Oscar Freire won today’s stage from Nimes to Digne-les-Bains, finally showing that he is worthy of the green jersey– at least for now.
Tomorrow, stage 15 crosses the border from France to the Italian Alps. The climbs will be brutal, and there may be changes in the overall classification. Race leader Cadel Evans is only one second ahead of Frank Schleck. Can Evans hold onto the yellow jersey? It’s going to be an exciting day in front of the TV!
