Marcel Kittel nipped Mark Cavendish at the line to win his third stage of the Tour de France. Cav looked at Kittel in disbelief as the two crossed the line. Cav got a textbook leadout from his Omega-Pharma-Quickstep teammate Gert Steegmans. Kittel (Argos-Shimano) came around Cav’s left side but Cav didn’t have the extra kick needed, and Kittel beat him by half a wheel length.
A dramatic crash in the final meters of the 135-mile race took down several riders including sprinter Andre Greipel (Lott0-Belisol), who wasn’t badly hurt, but missed out on collecting points in the race for the green sprinter’s jersey. Peter Sagan (Cannondale) still holds onto that lead, with Cav creeping up into second.
Sky’s Chris Froome escaped the final crash and remains in yellow.
