World time trial champion Tony Martin won today’s 20-mile individual time trial from Avranches to Mont-Saint-Michel. He waited more than three hours at the finish line to watch all the riders who started behind him fail to beat his time of 36 minutes, 29 seconds. Only Tour de France leader Chris Froome came close, finishing 12 seconds behind Martin.
“I didn’t expect to see him so close,” Martin said about Froome’s time. “I’m glad he lost sevreal seconds at the end.”
Froome now has a nice buffer in the overall standings, with 3:25 over Alejandro Valverde in second place.
