Martin Wins ITT; Froome Remains in Yellow

Martin watches Froome finish ITT.

World time trial champion Tony Martin won today’s 20-mile individual time trial from Avranches to Mont-Saint-Michel. He waited more than three hours at the finish line to watch all the riders who started behind him fail to beat his time of 36 minutes, 29 seconds. Only Tour de France leader Chris Froome came close, finishing 12 seconds behind Martin.

“I didn’t expect to see him so close,” Martin said about Froome’s time. “I’m glad he lost sevreal seconds at the end.”

Froome ITT start“There was a really strong headwind in the last few miles,” Froome said. “I was just trying to get through it, I was really struggling there.”

Froome now has a nice buffer in the overall standings, with 3:25 over Alejandro Valverde in second place.

Andy SchleckPoor Andy Schleck. He’s never been a time trialist, and today he finished way down in the list of riders. Andy, you’re a sweet kid, but you’ll never win a Tour de France unless you can time trial.
