Powerful Sprinters Aim for the Win: Greipel Gets It

Greipel wins stage 6Germany’s Andre Greipel won today’s Stage 6, a fast, flat day in the windy plains leading to Montpellier.

“I told the guys to wait as long as possible,” Greipel said. “Everyone can see that we have horsepower.”

Mark Cavendish after crashMark Cavendish crashed and spent a lot of energy trying to catch back up to the peloton, which was moving at 40 miles-per-hour. Peter Sagan had a double flat and also had to work to catch back up. Perhaps those efforts so late in the race cost the big sprinters the win today.

A five second gap between the 15th and 16th finishers changed the overall standings. That resulted in Daryl Impey taking the yellow jersey away from his Orica  Greenedge teammate Simon Gerrans. Impey is the first South African to ever wear the Tour’s yellow jersey.
