Mark Cavendish crashed and spent a lot of energy trying to catch back up to the peloton, which was moving at 40 miles-per-hour. Peter Sagan had a double flat and also had to work to catch back up. Perhaps those efforts so late in the race cost the big sprinters the win today.
A five second gap between the 15th and 16th finishers changed the overall standings. That resulted in Daryl Impey taking the yellow jersey away from his Orica Greenedge teammate Simon Gerrans. Impey is the first South African to ever wear the Tour’s yellow jersey.
