Mark Cavendish won the field sprint today’s Stage 5, a relatively flat route with no major hills of any consequence. It took five and a half hours for the peloton to complete the 142 miles from Cagnes-sur-Mer to Marseilles. Of the 198 guys who started the Tour five days ago, 195 finished today–most of them in the same time. What happened to the other three? Two withdrew and one was kicked out for missing the time cut by less than ten seconds in yesterday’s Team Time Trial. Ouch!
Cavendish hoped to win a stage by this point, but crashes and tough climbs didn’t allow that to happen until today. In fact, he finished the first four stages in 58th, 160th, 184th and 159th places– unimpressive numbers for a guy who is arguably the world’s fastest cyclist. But being the fastest doesn’t mean winning every race. Here’s a cool interview with Cav talking about his plan for the Tour.
