Mark Cavendish sprints for emotional stage win

Mark Cavendish was emotional after Stage 5 win.

Mark Cavendish won today’s Stage 5 of the Tour de France one day after a disappointing finish that had fans wondering if he lost his form.

After four and a half hours of racing from Épernay to Montargis, the Manxman still had the power to out-sprint 187 other riders. He was overjoyed to tears on the podium. “It means everything to win,” Cavendish said.

There are at least six more flat stages left in the Tour. How many more can Cav win?

I think he will do well to win two more. He is short of long-distance and climbing miles this year because of his various troubles, so I expect the Alps to take a lot out of him – and as for the Pyrenees …

If the sprinters’ teams can be bothered to chase down the break today – the longest stage of the Tour at the end of a long week, so not a given – he will have a great chance. After the Alps, we’ll have to see how his legs are, but clearly stage 11 is the first of a few opportunities as the race meanders west towards the Pyrenees.
