Fat Chance for Lance

Update: Armstrong’s Bad Luck on Stage 3 Cobblestones

Lance Armstrong may have lost his chance to win an eighth Tour de France today after losing almost a minute to main rival Alberto Contador.  Armstrong got a flat tire on a long section of bumpy, dusty pavé during the 132-mile race to Arenberg.

“Sometimes you’re the hammer, sometimes you’re the nail,” said Armstrong. “Today, I was the nail.”

Armstrong fell from fifth to eighteenth place in the overall standings, 50 seconds behind Contador.

Was it just bad luck or maybe bad tires? (And now a word from our sponsors…)

Lance will have to attack in the Alps now to try and close the gap before the Pyrenees. It’s a long shot, but his hopes aren’t quite extinguished yet.

Yesterday’s result confirmed my suspicion that Cadel Evans may yet be a dark horse in this race. If he can find an extra 2% on top of the good climbing form he showed at the Giro, he has a real chance of upsetting Contador with the long time trial still to come.

I’m also doing daily updates on each stage, if you’re interested – here’s my stage 3 review:
