Team Columbia’s Mark Cavendish won his second stage at the Tour de France with a magnificant sprint finish today in Toulouse. It rained almost the entire 107 miles, leaving the riders drenched and cold. If you’ve gone for a long bike ride in the rain, you know it can get gritty. Water shoots up your spine and dirt spits off the front tire into your mouth… it’s not pleasant. It must have been uncomfortable for the 170 guys still left in the Tour. They don’t use rain guards.
On the dope front, Spanish rider Manuel Beltran was expelled before today’s start. He tested positive for the illegal substance EPO. His Liquigas teammates will be able to continue the Tour, but Beltran’s cycling career is over. Beltran raced for two years with Lance Armstrong’s Discovery team. Bad boy, Beltran.
