Parlez Vous?

You don’t have to speak French to watch le Tour de France, but it doesn’t hurt to learn a few words.

  • Allez! (ah-lay) means go! Spectators shout allez! allez! along the race route.
  • Maillot jaune (my-oh schorn) is the yellow jersey worn by the rider in first place.
  • Lanterne rouge (lan-turn rooj) literally means red light, and in the Tour it refers to the rider in last place. Believe it or not, he receives an award for that.
